WAT IS OKAN?

OKAN is een OnthaalKlas voor Anderstalige Nieuwkomers. Op het Sint-Gabriëlcollege hebben we één OKAN-klas. Je volgt één jaar les in OKAN. In dit jaar leren we samen Nederlands en proberen we ons te integreren in de school en in België.

VOOR WIE IS OKAN?

  • Je bent minimaal 12 jaar (of je wordt voor 31 december van dit schooljaar 12 jaar) en maximaal 17 jaar (of je wordt ten laatste op 31 december van dit schooljaar 18 jaar).
  • Je woont maximaal 1 jaar in België.
  • Nederlands is niet je moedertaal.
  • Je kent nog niet genoeg Nederlands om lessen te volgen in het regulier onderwijs.

Uitzonderingen op deze voorwaarden zijn soms mogelijk. Contacteer ons zeker als je twijfelt.

WAT LEER JE?

Je komt 28 lesuren per week naar school. De focus ligt op het leren van het Nederlands. Je krijgt ook vakken als wiskunde, godsdienst, wereld, actua, sport (ook zwemmen), zang, dans, ICT, oriëntatie …

WAT DOEN WE NOG?

  • We helpen en begeleiden jou waar het kan. We willen dat jij je goed voelt!
  • We kijken waar jouw interesses en talenten liggen en we maken plannen voor de toekomst.
  • We begeleiden het traject van je studiekeuze: wat ga jij studeren na het OKAN-jaar?
  • Je volgt een snuffelstage in het regulier onderwijs.
  • Je krijgt ook de kans om soms een les in het regulier onderwijs te volgen.
  • We doen soms een uitstap buiten de school: een concert, museum, een bezoek aan een stad …
  • Je komt bij verschillende activiteiten in contact met onze OKAN-buddy’s, dat zijn enthousiaste leerlingen uit ons regulier onderwijs.
  • We werken samen aan een mooi artistiek project met een toonmoment in zaal Boechout Vooruit.
  • We volgen je traject verder op tot twee jaar na OKAN en proberen je te ondersteunen wanneer het nodig is.

WIL JE ONZE OKAN-WERKING ONDERSTEUNEN?

Een helpende hand is altijd welkom. Gezelschapsspelletjes, boekjes, warme jassen, zwemkledij, mutsen, sjaals, sportschoenen, fietsen … zijn zaken die we zeker kunnen gebruiken voor sommige van onze leerlingen of voor in onze klas. Een ander idee? Laat het ons gerust weten!

WHAT IS OKAN? 

OKAN stands for Onthaalklas voor Anderstalige Nieuwkomers (welcome class for students speaking a foreign language). At Sint-Gabriëlcollege, we have one OKAN class. You can attend the lessons in this class for only one year. During this year, we will learn the Dutch language together and you’ll try to integrate in our school and in Belgium. 

WHO IS OKAN FOR? 

  • You are at least 12 years old (or you turn 12 before the 31st of December of this school year) and not older than 17 (or you turn 18 on the 31st of December of this school year at the latest).
  • You have been living in Belgium for one year at most. 
  • Dutch is not your mother tongue.
  • Your level of Dutch is not good enough yet to take classes in the regular school system. 

Exceptions are possible. Contact us (see below) when in doubt. 

WHAT WILL YOU LEARN? 

You attend classes for 28 hours per week. Focus is on learning Dutch. You will also study subjects such as maths, religion, sports (including swimming lessons), topical matters, singing and dancing, orientation skills, IT…

WHAT ELSE DO WE DO?

  • We help and guide you wherever we can. We want you to feel good!
  • We try and find out where your talents and interests lie and plan for the future. 
  • We guide you through the process of choosing the right subject matters: what do you want to study after OKAN class? 
  • You will get to experience the regular school system during a try out. 
  • You will be able to take a couple of lessons in a regular class.
  • From time to time we organise an excursion outside of the school: to a concert, museum, visit a city…
  • You will meet our OKAN buddies on several occasions, these are committed students from our regular classes. 
  • Together, we create a beautiful, artistic project that we will showcase at Boechout Vooruit. 
  • For two years after OKAN, we continue to follow up your studies and try to help you when needed.
